April 24, 2024: Reds get Derrick Etienne Jr. from Atlanta United
Toronto FC acquired winger Derrick Etienne Jr. in a trade with Atlanta United FC in exchange for $200,000 in 2025 General Allocation Money (GAM). As part of the deal, Atlanta could also receive an additional $175,000 GAM if certain performance-based metrics are met.
Quick analysis: GM Jason Hernandez revealed on Monday that TFC were looking to add a player to their roster before the MLS primary transfer window closed on Tuesday. He described the target as being of a good age, with a strong pedigree and who would be a “core starter” in John Herdman’s team.
Etienne Jr., 27, fits that description, although he wasn't Hernandez's first choice (more on that later), as the U.S.-born winger is a veteran of eight MLS seasons, having previously turned out for the New York Red Bulls, FC Cincinnati (on loan), Columbus Crew and Atlanta.
