TFC loan a chance for Maxime Dominguez to get back on track
Out of favour at Vasco da Gama, the Swiss midfielder jumped at the chance to join Toronto FC when it inquired about him.
It’s not too often that a European player moves to South America in order to enhance his club career.
But that’s exactly Maxime Dominguez did when he left Portuguese outfit Gil Vicente last September to join Brazilian side Vasco da Gama via transfer. Dominguez spent two seasons in Portugal’s topflight where he scored six goals and tallied five assists in 40 appearances in all competitions, and the hope was that he’d provide a similar attacking spark for the famous club from Rio de Janeiro.
Things didn’t work out for the Swiss midfielder in Brazil, though. Opportunities were few and far between for Dominguez at Vasco because his path to the starting 11 was blocked by the more experienced and well known Philippe Coutinho and Dimitri Payet. He ended up scoring just one goal in 14 appearances for Vasco.
