Canada suffers upset loss to Argentina in friendly

The Canadian women’s team came out on the losing end against the South Americans for the first time in its history.

Canada suffers upset loss to Argentina in friendly
  • Canada 0, Argentina 1 (Rodríguez 34’)
  • Canadians lose for the 1st time in 8 games vs. Argentinians
  • Kayla Briggs, Holly Ward make their senior team debuts

With no major tournaments on the calendar in 2025, Canadian women’s team coach Casey Stoney can afford to experiment and try some different things this year.

Stoney used Tuesday’s friendly vs. Argentina as an occasion to hand national team debuts to midfielder Kayla Briggs and forward Holly Ward and give some valuable playing time to other young players.

And while a surprising 1-0 loss at Starlight Stadium in Langford, B.C. wasn’t the result that Stoney wanted, she managed to expand the national team player pool with an eye towards building for the 2027 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
