State of the union: Are we now seeing the real Toronto FC?
TFC are starting to show signs, be they ever so slight, of coming together and showing who they really are over the last month.
John Herdman sat deep in the bowels of Red Bull Arena last Saturday with a stoic look on his face as he waited to field questions from reporters.
You’d never know from his expression that Toronto FC had just earned a penalty shootout win away to the New York Red Bulls in the Leagues Cup, the team’s third victory in four games in all competitions.
Herdman didn’t want to get ahead of himself, so you could understand his restraint. He knows there’s still a long way to go in the MLS regular season and TFC have quite a bit of work to do to claim a playoff spot. They also have to overturn a deficit against Forge FC when they host the CPL champions in the second leg of the Canadian Championship semifinals in late August.
But recent results suggest there is a glimmer of hope for Herdman’s side. Bedevilled by injuries, international absences and suspensions throughout the year, TFC are starting to show signs, be they ever so slight, of coming together and showing who they really are over the last month.
