Toronto FC comes up with gutsy road win vs. Dynamo
- Toronto FC 1 (Owusu 54’), Houston Dynamo 0
- Owusu scores 1st goal in 10 MLS matches since May 18
- TFC beat Houston in 1st game between clubs since 2019
Idle since being eliminated from the Leagues Cup on Aug. 8, a short-handed Toronto FC made up for lost time with a crucial road win on Saturday night as it resumed its MLS campaign.
Outplayed by the Houston Dynamo for much of the contest, TFC managed to eke out a 1-0 victory at Shell Energy Stadium to record its eighth clean sheet in MLS in 2024 and bolster its playoff chances in the process.
Prince Owusu ended a personal streak of 10 league games without scoring by bagging the winner for Toronto (10-14-3) who solidified its hold on eighth place in the Eastern Conference with seven matches remaining in the regular season.
The shutout was Toronto’s second in a row in MLS, having blanked CF Montreal 1-0 in its last league outing on July 20, and it owed a lot to the stellar play of centre back Kevin Long. While the Reds struggled to create much in the final third, Long expertly quarterbacked a bend-but-don’t break defence that frustrated Houston all game long.
