TFC blanks Forge FC to advance to Canadian Championship final
- Toronto FC 1 (Insigne 50’), Forge FC 0
- Insigne’s winner was his 1st goal in 3 games in this year’s tournament
- Reds will play away to Vancouver Whitecaps in the final on Sept. 25
TORONTO – Outclassed by Forge FC last month, Toronto FC ended up exacting the ultimate revenge on the CPL champions on Tuesday night.
Lorenzo Insigne’s goal early in the second half was the decisive moment for TFC in their 1-0 win over Forge in the second leg of the Canadian Championship semifinals at BMO Field. The aggregate series ended in a 2-2 draw, but TFC advanced to the final of the domestic cup competition via the away goals rule.
Forge put forth a valiant effort in the return match and frustrated its MLS counterpart for most of the night, while also riding its luck at times and producing very little in the final third. Yet, for all of TFC’s domination, they only managed to score a single goal against the Hamilton-based club. The Reds were made to work for this result, and just managed to pull things out by the slimmest of margins.
