Canada exits Paris Olympics after loss to Germany

The Canadian women’s team’s aspirations of repeating as Olympic champions came to a heartbreaking end at the Paris Games on Saturday.  

Tied 0-0 after 120 minutes of regulation and extra time at Marseille’s Stade Vélodrome, Canada came up short in a 4-2 penalty shootout loss to Germany to bow out of the tournament.  

Quinn and Janine Beckie scored for Canada, while Ashley Lawrence and Adrian Leon had their penalty attempts stopped.  

This result ended Canada’s hopes of winning back-to-back golds and claiming a fourth consecutive Olympic medal. It also drew an official end to a remarkable run to the knockout round by Canada who won the respect of so many by doing so with the spectre of the ongoing spying/drone scandal hanging over its head.
