Bono vs. Westberg: The TFC goalkeeper 'controversy'
Why is Alex Bono starting ahead of Quentin Westberg for Toronto FC?
That’s one of the more interesting questions being asked about TFC ever since Chris Armas took over the coaching reins from Greg Vanney earlier this year and reinstated Bono as his starter.
Pundits, journalists and fans alike were more than a little surprised when Bono was handed the goalkeeper’s gloves for TFC’s first games of the season, a round-of-16 series in the Concacaf Champions League against Liga MX side Club León. The assignment, essentially, fell to Bono by default, as Westberg was late to report to camp due to personal reasons, and he didn’t actually join the club until after their first match in Mexico. That opened the door for Bono. Since helping the Reds advance to the quarter-finals, Bono has continued to start every game this campaign while Westberg, the club’s undisputed No. 1 over the previous two seasons, has sat on the bench biding his time.
