Canada draws Honduras in opener of World Cup qualifying

TORONTO - Canada is no longer slumming it with the minnows of Concacaf. It is running with the big boys of the region.

The Canadians were given a stark reminder of that and of the tough slog ahead on Thursday night, as they were forced to come from behind to earn a 1-1 draw against Honduras in their opening game of the final round of the Concacaf World Cup qualifiers.

After an uninspiring opening 45 minutes - with the exception of a few dangerous moments from Alphonso Davies - Canada rebounded in the second half to earn a share of the points courtesy of a Cyle Larin goal. The introduction of Junior Hoilett for Tajon Buchanan after halftime breathed new life into a limp attack in the Reds’ first home match since Oct. 15, 2019 when they earned a 2-0 win over the United States in the Concacaf Nations League. The announced attendance on Thursday night was 14,822 at BMO Field.
