Leon's goal lifts Canada to win over New Zealand in friendly
- Canada 1 (Leon 16’), New Zealand 0
- Reds sweep “Celebration Tour” series vs. Football Ferns
- Canadians have won 5 in a row, unbeaten in 12 matches
The Canadian women’s team’s homecoming ended up coming off without a hitch.
Canada made it two wins in a row in a span of four days over New Zealand, earning a 1-0 victory in an international friendly before an announced crowd of 11,323 at Montreal’s Stade Saputo on Tuesday night.
Adriana Leon scored again for Canada, who was coming off Saturday’s 5-1 win vs. New Zealand in Ottawa in the opener of this two-game set that’s been dubbed the “Celebration Tour.” Leon finished the series with three goals after bagging a brace on the weekend. The Canadians have now won five in a row and are unbeaten in 12 matches (eight wins), and sport a 9-2-4 record since coach Bev Priestman’s first match in charge earlier this year.
While the scoreline wasn’t as impressive, Canada was just as dominant in Montreal as it was in the nation’s capital, controlling the game and forcing its opponent to chase shadows. While better organized on the defensive end, New Zealand offered very little going forward in attack, and when it did, the hosts comfortably repelled the visitors.
