CanMNT Talk: Making sense of the John Herdman situation
It's unlikely that the Englishman was ever going to step down as coach of the Canadian men's with a home World Cup three years away.
The Canadian soccer community was thrown for a loop on Wednesday following a report by Newshub, a New Zealand news service, that John Herdman had agreed to terms to take over as coach of New Zealand's men's team, although it said a contract had not yet been signed.
Widespread speculation over Herdman's status led to Canada Soccer issuing a statement that Herdman was still under contract as coach of the Canadian men's team through the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Herdman also issued a statement saying: "I’ve received several offers in recent months, all of which I have turned down, including an offer from New Zealand Football... I’m not going anywhere."
So, what's really going on here? In the latest TFC Republic video blog, I discuss my thoughts on the John Herdman situation, why it was always unlikely he was going to leave, and what other factors were at play in this interesting story.
