Canada scores late to earn draw vs. Nigeria at home
The Canadians came from behind twice to salvage a result against the Super Falcons on Monday night.
- Canada 2 (Sinclair 49'; Zadorsky 87'), Nigeria 2 (Onumonu 5'; Ajibade 53')
- Sinclair scores 189th goal in her 310th appearance
- Zoe Burns, 20, earns her 1st cap for Canada
Bev Priestman told TFC Republic last week that the Canadian women’s team wanted to shift away from playing top 10 nations and face more unorthodox sides such as Nigeria.
Her rationale was that unheralded teams like the Super Falcons have a tendency to make things uncomfortable for her side, which makes for ideal preparation for Canada ahead of this summer’s Concacaf Championship in Mexico.
Priestman got her wish on Monday, as Canada was forced to scrap from behind twice to earn a 2-2 draw against Nigeria before 5,434 fans at Starlight Stadium on Vancouver Island. Iconic captain Christine Sinclair came off the bench to add to her world record goal scoring tally, while Shelina Zadorsky netted the equalizer late in dying minutes.
