Examining Toronto FC's roster as it heads into pre-season
One thing is clear when it comes to Toronto FC: Big changes must happen this winter after the club suffered through its worst ever season in 2023.
TFC finished bottom of the MLS table last year when it set new franchise records for fewest wins (four) and points (22) in a single campaign. GM Jason Hernandez assured fans last month that roster changes were coming, and that his goal was to have as many new recruits as possible in place by mid-January. But, thus far, TFC's only additions have been midfielder Deybi Flores and top draft pick Tyrese Spicer. Coach John Herdman noted this week that the team has to shed some players from the current squad before new recruits can be brought in.
"There has to be movement, some level of movement before we can seriously bring players in. There's some [salary] cap realities where we're really trying to hit the bullseye. The level of scrutiny that's gone into every single player that's now arriving has gone up. We're working hard to make sure as we make a commitment [about] the right people; it's got to be the right people coming to this club," Herdman said.
Let's look at Toronto FC's current roster as it kicks off its pre-season training camp this week in Florida.
