Redemption won't come easy for Toronto FC in 2024
The players have a point to prove and are looking to redeem themselves under John Herdman after a macabre 2023 campaign.
One of many buzzwords surrounding Toronto FC as it prepares for the 2024 MLS regular season is redemption.
TFC are coming off a franchise-worst season in which they set new club records for the fewest wins (four) and points (22) in a single MLS campaign while missing the playoffs for a third straight year.
Despite having one of the league’s highest payrolls – most of which was locked to Italian DPs Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi – the Reds managed just 26 goals in 34 games last year, tied for the worst offensive record in MLS. At the other end of the pitch Toronto conceded 59 times – only the LA Galaxy’s defence was breached more often.
TFC was the only team in the league not to earn a single road win in 2023 and they ended the season with a horrendous 1-15-0 record in all competitions after Bob Bradley was fired as head coach and sporting director in late June.
