Toronto FC vs. New York Red Bulls: 3 takeaways
TFC began their 2024 Leagues Cup season with a win away to the New York Red Bulls thanks in large part to Sean Johnson.
Toronto FC looks a good bet to advance to the knockout round in the Leagues Cup after earning an impressive road win over the New York Red Bulls in its tournament opener on Saturday.
TFC twice came back when the game was on the line to secure a 5-4 penalty shootout win at Red Bull Arena to take hold of first place in East Group 6 with two points. Toronto can clinch a spot in the round of 32 on Wednesday if New York loses in regulation time at home to Mexican club Pachuca.
"All in all, happy to take the two points tonight. Coming out of here with two points in the first match, we'll definitely take that in the group stage," TFC coach John Herdman said.
Here are my three major takeaways from Saturday's match.
