Canada advances at Paris Olympics with win over Colombia
- Canada 1 (Gilles 61’), Colombia 0
- 2nd match in a row that Gilles scored the game winner for Canada
- Canadians to play Germany in quarter-final on Saturday in Marseille
There’s no stopping the Canadian women’s team at the Paris Olympics.
Facing elimination squarely in the face for a second straight match, Canada kept alive its hopes of repeating as Olympic champions with a gutsy 1-0 win over Colombia on Wednesday at Allianz Riviera in Nice, France.
For the second game in a row, centre back Vanessa Gilles scored the winner for the Canadians, who are attempting to reach the medal podium at the Olympics for a fourth consecutive time
Ranked No. 8 in the world rankings, Canada was made to work for the victory against No. 22 Colombia, but was full value for the three points after surviving what was an incredibly trying group stage campaign with “drone-gate” hanging over its head.
