State of the union: Toronto FC stills need to find another level
It’s incredible to think that TFC would be in this position when the season kicked off. But there are still advances to be made.
Who could have seen this coming from Toronto FC?
A side that set franchise records in 2023 for fewest wins (four) and points (22) in a single season, and who didn’t make wholesale roster changes finds itself sitting sixth in the Eastern Conference and within touching distance of the top four at the official halfway point of the current MLS campaign.
Saturday’s 2-2 draw away to D.C. United extended the Reds’ winless run in MLS to three games, but it also ensured Toronto (7-7-3) was at the .500 mark and firmly in the playoff mix as it heads into the back end of the MLS season.
“They’ve [exceeded] expectations, mostly because we just didn’t know what this season would look like under John Herdman because he hadn’t been a club coach before. … They’re at a pretty good spot right now considering what last season looked like,” MLS Season Pass commentator Sacha Kljestan told TFC Republic.
