Canada goes into Copa with confidence after draw vs. France
The Canadians rebounded from a heavy defeat to the Netherlands by more than holding their own against the French on Sunday.
- Canada 0, France 0
- Eustáquio named captain after Davies wore armband vs. Dutch
- Toronto FC’s Laryea and Osorio were subbed on in 2nd half
At the 1986 FIFA World Cup, Canada made its tournament debut by pushing European heavyweight France to the limit before succumbing 1-0 in the searing Mexican sun.
Thirty-eight years later on Sunday, the teams met for the second time and once again the Canadians made life difficult for the French in a 0-0 draw in an international friendly at Bordeaux's Matmut Atlantique.
This is truly a remarkable result for Canada who is No. 49 in the current FIFA world rankings, 47 spots below two-time World Cup champion France. If the Canadians are going to make a splash at the 2026 World Cup on home soil, they’ll have to show they can compete against the top nations in world soccer.
