Henry Wingo eager to prove himself at TFC this season

GM Jason Hernandez had big expectations of Henry Wingo when Toronto FC landed the American defender last summer

Wingo arrived in Toronto as a free agent after his contract with Budapest-based club Ferencvárosi expired. He joined the Hungarian outfit in 2021 and helped them with four league titles and a domestic cup, while also featuring in the UEFA Europa League.

A native of Seattle, Wingo played NCAA soccer at the University of Washington before signing a homegrown contract with the Sounders prior to the 2017 MLS season. He made 22 appearances in three campaigns with Seattle, while also being loaned out to the USL's Tacoma Defiance. He was then sold in 2019 to Norwegian side Molde FK, and after winning a league title there he moved to Ferencvárosi.

A series of injuries and fitness issues slowed Wingo down in his return to MLS as he only played in four league matches for Toronto in 2024. Now with a full season ahead of him, he's eager to make up for lost time and show why TFC went to great lengths to get him.

In this one-on-one interview with TFC Republic, Wingo discusses how this season is a chance for him to show what he can do, life so far under new coach Robin Fraser, and much more.
