Moïse Bombito had a somewhat difficult time as an MLS rookie.

As the third overall pick in the 2023 MLS SuperDraft, the Canadian centre back had a lot of expectations resting on his shoulders going into his first season with the Colorado Rapids. Bombito was coming off a strong NCAA campaign with the University of New Hampshire in which he was named a second team all-American, and Colorado was counting on the Montreal native to hit the ground running in MLS.

But after being an unused substitute in the Rapids’ season opener, Bombito picked up a knee injury during a training session that sidelined him for several weeks. That setback forced a delay in his debut for the Rapids, which eventually came on May 13, followed by his first league start later that same month, en route to making only 11 MLS appearances (eight starts) that year.

The injury played a part in Bombito’s limited playing time during his rookie campaign. Also, Colorado was coming off a disappointing 2022 campaign and the pressure was on coach Robin Fraser to get the club back on track. So, he was more inclined to put his trust in experienced players.
