TFC's Alonso Coello has big ambitions for 2025 season
"I’m expecting this to be a year in which I truly establish myself as a player in my position that is one of the top within [MLS]," Coello said.

It’s been a slow and steady ascent for Alonso Coello at Toronto FC.
After cutting his teeth with TFC 2 in MLS NEXT Pro, the Spanish midfielder was signed to a senior team contract by Toronto in 2023 and he didn’t disappoint in his rookie year. Coello made 21 league appearances (17 starts) under Bob Bradley, winning plaudits for his mature and poised performances on the pitch.
Things were even better in 2024 under John Herdman as he made more appearances (25) and starts (20), and logged more minutes (1,540) than he did in 2023. Coello's second MLS campaign also saw him record two assists (double his output from the previous season) and score his first goal in a 2-1 home loss to Nashville SC on June 19. He achieved all of this despite missing suffering a hamstring injury in late June that sidelined him until September.
Coello, 25, appears to be ready for another season of a heavy workload in 2025 under Robin Fraser, the third coach he’s played for since joining the first team. Fraser has included the Spaniard in his starting 11 in both of the Reds’ opening two matches of the current campaign, including giving him a 90-minute run in the 2-2 draw away to D.C. United in the season opener.
