Toronto FC loses to New York City FC in Insigne's return
- Toronto FC 2 (Bernardeschi 55’; Petretta 89’), New York City FC 3 (Rodríguez 23’; Jones 44’; Perea 78’)
- TFC’s 5-game winning streak snapped in 1st loss since April 13
- Ugly scenes after final whistle with both teams involved in melee
TORONTO – A win by Toronto FC on Saturday night would have brought them up to 22 points on the 2024 MLS campaign, the same number of points they recorded all last season.
But TFC couldn’t get the job done and squandered a chance to climb into second place in the Eastern Conference thanks to a 3-2 loss to New York City FC at BMO Field that was further marred by some very ugly scenes after the game was over.
Federico Bernardeschi and substitute Raoul Petretta scored for Toronto (6-5-1), who saw its five-match winning streak in all competitions come to an end as it suffered its first defeat in a month.
Lorenzo Insigne came off the bench in the 76th minute with Toronto trailing by a goal. But not even the return of the Italian DP, who missed TFC’s last eight matches with a hamstring injury, could inspire the home side to a come-from-behind win. Insigne’s previous appearance was on March 23.
