Has Lorenzo Insigne been a total bust at Toronto FC?
If the Italian was on regular deal, things might be different. But it’s impossible not to judge him through the lens of his exorbitant salary.
Where to start when discussing Lorenzo Insigne’s tenure with Toronto FC?
Let’s go back to the very beginning, on July 23, 2022.
Inspired by Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi, a new-look TFC played like world beaters, romping to a 4-0 victory over Charlotte FC before 29,067 fans at BMO Field. The Reds scored four first-half goals for the first time in franchise history, and then comfortably held off the expansion side after the Italian duo were subbed out at halftime.
The arrival of Insigne sparked something special at Toronto FC, both on and off the field, as there was genuine buzz in the city about the MLS club. The vibe inside BMO Field against Charlotte was unlike anything witnessed there in a very long time. Hope and joy replaced the doom and despair that had permeated through the terraces all season, with the TFC faithful hanging on every single move made by the team playing in front of them. And Insigne was in the middle of all of it.
