Canada blanks Suriname in 1st leg of Concacaf series
The Canadians earned a gritty road win on Friday in the first leg of their Concacaf Nations League quarter-final.
- Canada 1 (Hoilett 82’), Suriname 0
- Canadians hold the advantage ahead of 2nd leg next week in Toronto
- Celtic defender Alistair Johnston earned his 50th cap for Les Rouges
It wasn’t pretty, but the Canadian men’s team managed to eventually get the job done.
Junior Hoilett came off the bench to score lone goal in a scrappy game and guide Canada to a gritty 1-0 win over Surname in Friday’s first leg of the Concacaf Nations League quarter-final.
The hosts frustrated Canada for most of the match before Hoilett’s late heroics silenced the announced crowd of 4,500 inside Dr. Ir. Franklin Essed Stadion in the capital city of Paramaribo.
The Canadians will host Suriname in the return match at BMO Field on Nov. 19 (7:30 p.m. ET/OneSoccer), needing only a draw to advance to next year’s Nations League Finals.
