Canada vs. Suriname: What you need to know
The Canadians can qualify for the Concacaf Nations League finals with a win or draw vs. Suriname on Tuesday in Toronto.
After squeaking out a slim victory on the road, the Canadian men's team will be looking to put the hammer down when it hosts Suriname this week in the second leg of its Concacaf Nations League quarter-final.
Junior Hoilett came off the bench to score the lone goal in a scrappy game and guide Canada to a gritty 1-0 win over Surname in last Friday’s first leg in Paramaribo. Even though Canada is No. 35 in the current FIFA world rankings – 131 spots above Suriname – it struggled to break down its Concacaf cohorts.
"It's a little bit the story of our team … because we don't find a way to get that goal in the first half with some big chances, the game is in the balance. And then we have to put a lot of energy into it. And it doesn't put us in the position that we want in the series but it's a tough place to play down here," coach Jesse Marsch told reporters after the win.
