TFC Talk: Defensive issues haunted John Herdman's side

Toronto FC missed out on the playoffs in 2024 for a fourth straight season thanks in no small part to a leaky defence.

Coach John Herdman switched to a three centre back system and brought in newcomers Kevin Long and Nicksoen Gomis in his first full campaign at the helm. But TFC ended up having the the fifth-worst defensive record in the Eastern Conference this season with 61 goals against – two more than they conceded last year.

TFC Republic spoke to fellow Toronto FC beat reporter James Grossi, who also operates the Unattached FC website, to evaluate the team's centre backs and the defence's overall performance in 2024.
