Drab Canada settles for draw in friendly vs. Iceland
- Canada 0, Iceland 0
- Lawrence wore captain’s armband for 1st time in 140 caps for Canada
- Proulx came off bench at start of 2nd half in her senior team debut
The Canadian women’s team was all bark and no bite in its return to action on Friday.
Canada looked comfortable playing out from the back and in its buildup play, but was toothless up front as it settled for a 0-0 draw against Iceland in an international friendly at Pinatar Arena in Murcia, Spain.
The goal-less stalemate was Canada’s first outing since it earned a credible 1-1 draw against reigning World Cup champions Spain in an Oct. 25 friendly in Almendralejo.
Canada showed plenty of attacking intent against its European opponent but failed to carve out any dangerous scoring chances, as it was let down by lack of thrust in the final third of the pitch. At the same time, the Canadians kept things defensively tight in earning their ninth clean sheet of the year, and third in four matches.
