Jonathan Osorio lone Toronto FC player on Canada's latest roster
The veteran TFC midfielder has been included in interim manager Mauro Biello's first squad for Canada's upcoming friendly vs. Japan.
Toronto FC’s Jonathan Osorio will be on international duty this month as he’ll be able to take a small break from his MLS club’s nightmarish campaign.
Interim national team coach Mauro Biello on Thursday announced his 23-man squad for Canada's upcoming international friendly vs. Japan. Included in his initial Canadian roster is Osorio who was the lone TFC player to make the cut.
Canada plays Japan on Oct. 13 at Niigata's Denka Big Swan Stadium (6:30 a.m. ET/OneSoccer), a match it will use to prepare for the 2023-2024 Concacaf Nations League which serves as the qualifier for Concacaf teams participating in the 2024 Copa America. The U.S. is hosting the South American championship next summer with 10 CONMEBOL teams plus the six best Concacaf nations as guests.
Considered a key figure for the Canadian men’s team, Osorio, 31, has nine goals in eight assists in 68 appearances (50 as a starter) since making his international debut in 2013. He played in 13 of the Reds’ 14 games during the final round of the Concacaf World Cup qualifiers, making eight starts and scoring in a 1-1 draw away to Mexico. He also played in all three group-stage games at the World Cup in Qatar and was a member of the Canadian side that competed at the Concacaf Nations League and Gold Cup earlier this year.
