Interim coaching staff to oversee Canada's friendly vs. Spain
The Canadian women's team will play its first game this month since the Paris Olympics under the supervision of an interim coaching staff.
The biggest news stemming from Canada Soccer’s announcement on Wednesday doesn’t pertain to who is on the Canadian women’s team roster for this month’s international friendly.
The biggest news is who will be in charge when Canada faces Spain on Oct. 25 at Estadio Francisco de la Hera in Almendralejo.
Rather than relying on the traditional head coach model, Canada Soccer said in a media release that an interim coaching staff has been formed for the October international window featuring returning coaches Andy Spence, Jen Herst, and Neil Wood.
It was Spence who served as the Canadian team’s acting coach at the 2024 Summer Olympics when Bev Priestman was sent home and subsequently banned for one year by FIFA for her involvement in the drone scandal that plagued the Paris Games.
