The glory days of Vanney and Bezbatchenko are long gone. But TFC operates with a sense of entitlement, as though winning is a birthright.

State of the union: Toronto FC has to learn some humility

The look of pure exasperation from John Herdman said it all.

Toronto FC had just lost 1-0 to Inter Miami at home in its regular season finale on Saturday afternoon, a defeat that all but hammered the final nail into its coffin.

TFC weren’t officially eliminated from playoff contention after this latest setback. Their post-season hopes still hung in the balance by the barest of threads, as losses by D.C. United and the Philadelphia Union later that same evening would’ve offered the Reds a stay of execution.

But Herdman didn’t have to wait until then to know the jig was up. His face said it all when he walked into the media room at BMO Field for the post-match press conference, looking like a defeated man who understood it was already all over for his embattled side.
