Patrice Bernier: Timing of Voyageurs Cup final makes it more important

This year’s Canadian Championship final between Toronto FC and CF Montreal is being dominated by one overriding narrative.

There were a lot of expectations of TFC and Montreal headed into the 2021 MLS season, but ultimately, they both failed to make the playoffs – Montreal came up short on the last day of the campaign, while Toronto had long since been eliminated.

So, in many ways, Sunday’s game at Stade Saputo offers them a shot at some redemption, a chance to salvage a bit of pride during what has turned out to be a failed season. But this year’s Voyageurs Cup final has also taken on extra significance, according to retired Canadian international midfielder Patrice Bernier, because of its unique timing.
