'Rush of emotions' for Alex Bono in return to BMO Field vs. TFC

"I have nothing but love for the fans here and the time I spent here,” Bono told TFC Republic after playing against his former club.

'Rush of emotions' for Alex Bono in return to BMO Field vs. TFC

Alex Bono has been gone for almost two years after his time at Toronto FC ended on a somewhat sour note.

But the former Reds goalkeeper still has fond memories and close ties to both the city and the team.

That’s what made last Saturday’s game between TFC and D.C. United such a special occasion for the 30-year-old native of Baldwinsville, New York. Bono ended up making a pair of saves in helping D.C. earn a 3-1 win over the Reds.

Released by Toronto following the 2022 MLS season, Bono signed with D.C. as a free agent prior to the 2023 campaign and returned to BMO Field with his new club last May, although he didn’t see any action as the club's backup option. This year, Bono has firmly established himself as D.C.’s No. 1 goalkeeper with two clean sheets and a 7-8-7 record in 22 starts.
