Toronto FC blanked by Inter Miami in 17th loss of season
- Toronto FC 0, Inter Miami 3 (F. Higuain 10’; Makoun 45’; Zavaleta own-goal 61’)
- Marshall-Rutty earns 1st career MLS start for Toronto
- Soteldo starts but leaves late in 1st half due to injury
Playing Toronto FC proved to be the perfect tonic for an Inter Miami side mired in a terrible losing slump and fighting to keep its faint post-season hopes alive.
TFC came out on the wrong end of a 3-0 decision away to Inter Miami on Wednesday, a result that extended the Reds’ winless and goal-less run on the road to three consecutive matches.
With its second consecutive loss overall, Toronto (6-17-7) remains in second-last place in the MLS standings. Miami (10-15-5) snapped a six-game losing skid that saw them outscored 16-1, and also made up some ground in the Eastern Conference playoff race.
It was yet another match to forget in a nightmare of an MLS campaign for Toronto, whose defensive marking on set pieces against Miami was comical. TFC now sports an anaemic 1-14-1 record in MLS in 2021 when trailing at halftime, and have given up three or more goals eight times, as well as a league-worst 59 goals in 30 games.
