Toronto FC puts in solid showing in draw vs. Atlanta United
TFC earned their first point of the season with a hard-fought draw in Georgia on Saturday night.
- Toronto FC 1 (Bernardeschi 52’), Atlanta United 1 (Rossetto 60’)
- Newcomer Sean Johnson brilliant between posts for TFC
- Italian DP Lorenzo Insigne was absent due to a leg injury
While Toronto FC was missing the most expensive player in MLS on Saturday, its goalkeeper managed to come up with a big-money performance.
Newcomer Sean Johnson put in a man-of-the-match effort as part of a solid defensive display from TFC who earned a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Atlanta United at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
With Lorenzo Insigne ruled out due to a leg injury, fellow Italian Federico Bernardeschi provided the offence for Toronto, while Johnson made six saves to help his side leave Georgia with a share of the points.
Toronto’s record away from BMO Field was abysmal last year -- just two wins and 11 losses in 17 matches. Conversely, Mercedes-Benz Stadium is one of the toughest places to play in MLS for visiting teams. Atlanta is unbeaten in seven all-time regular season home games against Toronto with three wins. TFC's only victory in Georgia came during the 2019 MLS Cup playoffs. So, all things considered, this was a valuable road point and an admirable showing by TFC.
