Tactical breakdown: Chris Mavinga a key defensive piece for TFC
Mavinga is still a solid MLS defender who can form part of Toronto FC's defensive spine over the next couple of years. But can he stay healthy?
Whatever transpires from now until the end of the regular season, Toronto FC has established a foundation to build on for 2023 and beyond.
Domenico Criscito, Federico Bernardeschi, Lorenzo Insigne, Mark-Anthony Kaye and – depending on his future past June 2023 – Richie Laryea have formed most of the spine of coach Bob Bradley’s system. Apart from the injured Kaye, all those players have helped guide the Reds into the playoff picture with five games remaining which bodes well for next season, provided the club improves the areas around the spine.
Chris Mavinga could be part of that core, too. The 31-year-old’s contract expires at season’s end but the club holds an option to extend the deal through 2023. However, given Mavinga’s extensive injury history, that might give the team hierarchy pause over triggering it. It’s not any easier based on his excellent form since returning from injury earlier this summer.
Here’s is an in-depth breakdown of Mavinga’s recent performances.
