July 10, 2023: TFC adds Franco Ibarra via loan deal
Toronto FC announced it has acquired Argentine midfielder Franco Ibarra on a loan deal from Atlanta United FC for the remainder of the 2023 MLS season. In return, Atlanta receives $50,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM). Atlanta also retains the player’s rights following the conclusion of the loan – Toronto doesn’t have the option to make Ibarra a permanent signing.
Quick analysis: Ibarra, 22, signed with Atlanta as a U22 initiative player on February 22, 2021, and made 59 appearances across all competitions. He’s played in 17 league games this season (15 as a starter), recording six shots and logging 1,280 minutes.
Ibarra, a defensive midfielder, was originally acquired by Atlanta from Argentinos Juniors in his native Argentina where he made 11 appearances prior to his move to MLS. The Argentine began his career in 2010 at Argentinos Juniors, working his way through the youth system before making his professional debut in 2019.
"Franco is a bright talent who will provide us with both quality and steel in our midfield," Toronto FC general manager Jason Hernandez said in a news release. "He is a warrior, a top young professional, and we are excited to have the opportunity to work with Franco for the remainder of the 2023 season."
