Jacob Shaffelburg takes new fullback role at Toronto FC in stride
"The change has been harder some days than others. But on the good days it’s fun, and all in all I’m really enjoying it,” Shaffelburg said.
Nothing seems to faze Jacob Shaffelburg, not even being asked to play a completely new position.
That was the task that Toronto FC coach Bob Bradley handed Shaffelburg on the third day of pre-season training camp in January when the winger was told he was going to be converted into a left fullback.
Shaffelburg, a 22-year-old native of Nova Scotia, looked set for another year on the left wing after enjoying a breakout campaign for the Reds in 2021. But a slew of off-season departures left the club short of depth at fullback ahead of the 2022 season, and both Shaffelburg and teenager Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty were tasked to fill in by Bradley.
