TFC suffers 1st setback under Perez in road loss to Philly

For the first time in the Javier Perez era the “old” Toronto FC reared its head, and the results were ugly.

In an anaemic performance that harkened back to the team’s dark days under Chris Armas, TFC saw their season-high five game unbeaten run come to a screeching halt after suffering an embarrassing 3-0 road loss to the Philadelphia Union on Wednesday night.

Toronto, now 3-9-5 on the season, collected nine of a possible 15 points without a loss through its first five matches since Perez took over as interim coach following the firing of Armas on July 4.

But this was easily the Reds’ worst showing under the Spaniard, especially during the first half when they totally lacked urgency, were far too passive in their defending, and had too many passengers on the pitch (Chris Mavinga was the worst culprit). Toronto’s static three-man defence was routinely cut open, Philadelphia overran TFC in midfield, and the Reds’ attack looked limp.
