Alex Bono: 'I'm rooting for TFC to turn things around'
It's a date that Alex Bono has had circled on his calendar for a long time.
The veteran goalkeeper returns to BMO Field for the first time since parting ways with Toronto FC at the end of last season when the Reds host D.C. United on Saturday (7:30 p.m. ET/Apple TV).
Bono, a 29-year-old native of Baldwinsville, New York, left Toronto as its all-time leader in clean sheets (35), wins (67), appearances (157) and starts (154) for a goalkeeper in all competitions. He also played a major role in TFC's MLS Cup championship in 2017 and the run to the 2018 Concacaf Champions League final, while also winning four Canadian Championships.
Last December, he signed with D.C. but thus far he's watched as fellow free agent Tyler Miller has started all 14 MLS games in goal for the capital club in 2023. Bono has had to be content with a pair of starts in the U.S. Open Cup.
In this one-on-one interview with TFC Republic, Bono discussed his move to D.C. United, how he's settled in at this new club, playing under D.C. coach Wayne Rooney, returning to BMO Field for the first time, his views on the current Toronto FC side, and much more.
