Toronto FC loses to Real Salt Lake in Terry Dunfield’s debut
- Toronto FC 0, Real Salt Lake 1 (Julio 90’+2’)
- Insigne subbed off after 45 minutes; Stefanovic makes MLS debut
- TFC were without 10 players due to injuries & international duty
TORONTO – New coach, same old Toronto FC.
The start of the Terry Dunfield era at TFC didn’t result in the proverbial “new manager bounce,” as the Reds suffered a 1-0 loss to Real Salt Lake on Saturday before an announced crowd of 26,694 at BMO Field.
TFC looked like they were going to collect a point before Salt Lake's Anderson Julio scored deep into injury time off a rebound attempt from in close after the Reds failed to clear their lines.
Toronto (3-8-10) showed plenty of spirit and attacking intent on the night, but lacked that extra bit of quality in the final third and once again couldn’t close things out. The Reds are now winless in six MLS matches and have lost three in a row – their last victory came on May 27.
Italian DPs Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi had quiet evenings, with Insigne being subbed out after only 45 minutes due to an injury. Bernardeschi has now gone without a goal in 15 games in all competitions for Toronto. The last time he scored was on April 1. No wonder TFC has one of the worst attacking records in MLS with just 18 goals in 21 matches.
